Always moved by Shirley Chisholm's words that “service, [is] the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this Earth,” A.C.T.S. is a community service organization that strives to address the issues of education, health, poverty and politics in Atlanta, Georgia with the help of active members at Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University. Our goal is to change our surrounding community by providing academic scholarships, promoting health awareness, political activism, and to decrease poverty, but most importantly we strive to pay our rent for having the privilege to live on this Earth.
The purpose of A.C.T.S shall be the following:
1. To promote social awareness through community service and civic engagement in the Atlanta University Center and its surrounding community.
2. To provide members in the community access to higher education, dispel the ignorance of HIV/AIDS and other health issues, demolish poverty and engage in political development to address laws within the nation and the state of Georgia.
3. To participate in initiatives with student organizations in the Atlanta University Center
4. To assist in unifying all members of the Atlanta University Center through community service and civic engagement.
Section A. General membership shall be open to all undergraduate students. Students must be currently enrolled in at least 12 semester hours at Spelman College. Interviews are held to select new members to the organization.
Section B. Associate membership shall be composed of faculty and staff of Spelman College. Students enrolled in other AUC institutions are assigned associate membership. The limitations of associate members are that they are not required to pay dues, cannot hold office and do not have voting privileges towards Spelman Colleges A.C.T.S chapters.
Section C. Members are considered in good standing if they have paid their dues, attend at least 8 membership functions which includes 2 meetings and 1 event a month.
Section D. Non-Discrimination Statement: No otherwise qualified individual shall be excluded from membership on the basis of age, race, gender, disability, national origin, religion or sexual orientation.
Actively Changing Tomorrow through Service aligns with the mission of Spelman College because we offer community service to the Greater Atlanta area in improving the welfare of our surrounding temporary community.
